With freezing temperatures expected across Texas this weekend, now is a good time to pause and think about home heating safety. Based on the Texas Department of Insurance’s recently-published article, the State Fire Marshal’s Office is urging residents to take extra precautions, as heating equipment is one of the leading causes of wintertime house fires.
To help keep your home and family safe, the State Fire Marshal’s Office recommends the following home heating safety tips:
- Never use your oven to heat your home.
- Inspect space heaters before use. Check for cracked or broken plugs, frayed cords, or loose connections.
- Plug heaters directly into wall outlets. Avoid using extension cords or power strips.
- Keep heaters at least three feet away from curtains, bedding, furniture, and other flammable materials.
- Turn off space heaters when you leave the room or go to sleep.
- Never run a portable generator indoors or in a garage—even with doors or windows open. Generators should always be used outdoors, at least 20 feet away from doors and windows.
- Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they’re working properly.
Cold weather can be unpredictable, but taking a few simple precautions can make a big difference. Staying mindful of heating safety helps protect your home, your loved ones, and your peace of mind throughout the winter season.
